🗺️ Heibi-kan Kyoto Museum of Contemporary Art

📝 Introduction

Carefully appreciate modern Japanese art on the streets of Kyoto.

📖 Details

Established in 1981, this private art museum is located in the beautiful Gion district of Kyoto, near Yasaka Shrine, where visitors can appreciate modern and contemporary art. The museum's name, "Hahikukan," expresses the idea that "in academia and the art world, people are often bound by so-called correct established theories. However, we should continue to question these established theories with a free spirit, pondering thoughts like 'What exactly are they?'" The museum focuses on the collection of works by representative 20th-century artists such as Kitō Ōshū, Japanese painter Murakami Kakyō, and Western painter Yamaguchi Kaoru, as well as modern and contemporary paintings, crafts, and photographs from both domestic and international sources. Notably, the collection of Murakami Kakyō's works is considered one of the highest in quality and quantity in Japan and was a significant factor in the museum's establishment. On the fifth floor, there is a tea room, and the garden "Hikari-niwa" unfolds before you, creating a striking contrast between natural light and the outlines of green plants. As time passes, the landscape changes, leaving visitors in awe. The building was designed by the museum's director, Kajikawa Yoshitomo, creating a space where one can enjoy a sense of tranquility and engage in a thorough dialogue with the artworks.
