🗺️ Hekishima (Nagasaki Prefecture)

📝 Introduction

There is an island of faith where many Christians reside, welcoming visitors with beautiful natural scenery and fresh island ingredients.

📖 Details

Located in Nagasaki Prefecture, Kuroshima has a circumference of 12.5 kilometers and is situated about 12 kilometers west of Sasebo City. It is the largest island in the Kujukushima archipelago. There are many legends regarding the origin of the island's name, with the most compelling explanation being that from the sea, Kuroshima appears very dark due to its dense trees, hence the name "Kuroshima." Kuroshima village was designated as part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site "Hidden Christian Sites in the Nagasaki Region" in 2018. It is said that Christianity was introduced to Japan about 300 years ago. During the late Edo period, Christians faced repression due to the shogunate's prohibition of Christianity and many fled to Kuroshima to live. Currently, it is said that 80% of the island's residents are Christians. The Kuroshima Catholic Church, built in 1902 from red bricks, includes some bricks made from Kuroshima's red clay. The hand-painted wood grain and other decorations on the ceiling reflect the devout faith of the worshippers. On the island, in addition to attractions like the Akou giant tree, which is over 100 years old, and the fern observation deck with views of the sea, visitors can also experience making traditional foods such as Kuroshima red bean buns and Kuroshima tofu. There are cafes and inns on the island, where visitors can relax with a coffee while enjoying the scenery, or choose to stay overnight. There is no public transportation like buses or taxis on the island, so it is recommended to rent an electric bicycle to explore the island.

⭐ Highlights

You can rent bicycles or electric bicycles at the tourist information center "Kuroshima Guesthouse." At Kuroshima Guesthouse, you can purchase various local specialties from the island. It is recommended to try the Kuroshima specialty dish "Shima Rice," made with locally sourced Kuroshima tofu. There are guided island tours available, both full-day and half-day (fees apply & reservations are required). The back wall of Kuroshima Catholic Church features a semi-circular brick wall, making the architecture very distinctive.
