Kitahiroshima Town (北竜町) Sunflower Village is located in the central part of Hokkaido, where a vast number of sunflowers bloom beautifully and attract much attention. The origin of sunflower cultivation in Kitahiroshima Town dates back to 1979 (Showa 54), when a staff member from the Kitahiroshima Agricultural Cooperative was deeply moved by the sight of large fields of sunflowers used for cooking oil in Yugoslavia. With up to 2 million sunflowers, it boasts the largest flower field in Japan and is also a very popular cycling destination. Kitahiroshima Town promotes the area using sunflowers and hosts various exciting events.
