About Hydrangea Park (Koganei City, Tokyo)
The entire park is filled with colorful hydrangeas.
Details
Opened in 1973 (Showa 48), this park was built to create a hydrangea paradise. This small yet beautiful park utilizes the preserved trees such as Quercus acutissima and Fagus crenata in the lowland area, filling the forest with hydrangeas. After its opening, the surrounding trees grew stronger, blocking the sunlight that the light-loving hydrangeas needed, leading to a crisis of extinction. Later, from December 1996 to March 1997, a green space management technique called "Budding Renewal" was implemented, where the trees were cut down and new seedlings were planted, transforming the park into a beautiful new landscape. During the blooming season, over 1,500 charming hydrangeas blossom, enveloping the entire park in a beautiful, dreamy atmosphere.
The blooming season typically occurs from mid to late June each year. Various species, including Western Hydrangeas and Japanese Hydrangeas, bloom in a competition of colors such as white, pink, blue, and purple, enchanting all visiting guests. Each year, in conjunction with the hydrangea blooming period, a "Hydrangea Festival" is held, along with workshops on hydrangea pruning and hiking activities.
