About Ishikawa Prefecture Kutani Pottery Museum

The collection covers Kutani ware works from its inception to becoming modern art pieces.

Details

The Ishikawa Prefecture Kutani Ware Museum specializes in collecting Kutani ware, a traditional craft that represents Ishikawa Prefecture, and is the only Kutani ware museum in Japan. Visitors can thoroughly appreciate these masterpieces while learning about the over 365-year history and the various painting styles created during this period. Kutani ware was born in the early Edo period. The discovery of ceramic stone in Kutani Village (now Kutani Town, Yamanaka Onsen, Kaga City, Ishikawa Prefecture) led to the establishment of a pottery kiln and the beginning of ceramic production. Various painting styles have evolved over time. The main styles include "Ao-te" (青手), "Iroe" (色繪, also known as Gosaite), and "Aka-e" (赤繪, also known as Kinrande). "Ao-te" is a style that vividly applies colored pigments across the entire vessel, with the green pigment combinations being particularly impressive. "Iroe" (Gosaite) freely utilizes various colors known as "Kutani Gosaite," including green, yellow, purple, deep blue, and red, to depict subjects in a realistic manner. "Aka-e" (Kinrande) employs the unique properties of red paint to create intricate designs across the entire vessel, often enhanced with brilliant gold to add a luxurious luster. Today, it has transcended the framework of traditional crafts and is recognized as art, boasting a rich variety of design styles. The museum also features a tea room where seasonal tea is served in Kutani ware vessels. Visitors can enjoy a relaxing time surrounded by beautiful works of art.
