About Izumo Culture Heritage Museum
The garden, representing the Izumo style, conveys the long-standing traditions of Izumo to the present day.
Details
The facility aims to "pass down the gradually disappearing traditional culture of the Izumo region to the present," surrounded by the beautiful Tsukiyaki pines unique to the Izumo area.
Upon passing through the main gate, you are greeted by the old residence of the Kaku family, which became prosperous in ancient times. This impressive house, built in the 29th year of the Meiji era (1896), has been relocated here, allowing visitors to appreciate the characteristics of traditional architecture from the past. It features a spacious earthen floor, large zelkova pillars, and majestic black pine beams, creating an atmosphere full of taste and charm. The three interconnected rooms—san-no-ma, ni-no-ma, and the study—allow visitors to enter without shoes.
From the study, you can see the beautifully arranged dry landscape garden in the Izumo style, paved with sand and stones. The expansive stone garden covers about 430 tsubo and is planted with lush greenery, including black pines. It is said to be influenced by the tea ceremony, as the garden features stepping stones, lanterns, and a hand-washing basin.
After leisurely enjoying the garden, it is recommended to visit the workshop to view the exhibition, which showcases representative Japanese art crafts and works by local artists. For more details on the exhibition, please check the official website.
