About J Art Foundation
The modern art hub born in 2025, featuring works by teamLab and Yoshitomo Nara!
Details
The Sapporo Art Museum, which opened in 2006, is Hokkaido's first contemporary art museum. After seven years of closure, it will be renamed "J Art Foundation" and reopened with renovations in May 2025.
In the exhibition space converted from an old church site, the internationally acclaimed teamLab presents the artwork "Endless Life in the Ruins of the Church - A Whole Year per Year," created using digital technology. Visitors can experience a world of art themed around birth and death in a space that changes with the seasons, blending experiential art with the real world.
Additionally, the courtyard features works by renowned contemporary Japanese artists such as Yoshitomo Nara, Kohei Nawa, and Shiro Matsui, creating a landscape where their art harmonizes with nature, making it worth a visit.
Tickets are available by reservation, requiring a specified date and time, and re-entry is not allowed. The experiential works by teamLab are periodically changed, and the courtyard's artworks can be freely visited before closing. Currently, the museum is partially open, with new exhibition content planned for the future. In 2026, a solo exhibition of original works by Suehiro Maruo and a collection exhibition focusing on post-war modern art in Japan are anticipated, which is exciting.
