About Jiyu Gakuen Myoukan (Jiyu Gakuen Tomorrow Hall)
National Important Cultural Property, a renowned building designed by Frank Lloyd Wright.
Details
The "Jiyu Gakuen" school building, constructed in the 10th year of the Taisho era (1921), was repurposed for other uses in the 9th year of the Showa era (1934). Designed by the renowned architect Frank Lloyd Wright, known for his work on the "Imperial Hotel" among others, it is not only regarded as an outstanding example of modern architecture but has also been designated as an important cultural property of the nation.
When Jiyu Gakuen Meiji-kan was listed as a cultural property, a preservation and restoration project was undertaken to address the aging of the building. In addition to reinforcing the structure and waterproofing, the colors of the fixtures were restored based on historical documents from that time. The central building designed by Wright, the auditorium designed by Wright's student Endo Shin, and the commemorative mural for the school's 10th anniversary hidden behind the wall have all been successfully restored.
Currently, the facility is primarily open on weekdays, allowing for casual visits. On the third Friday of each month, it offers nighttime tours, providing a different atmosphere compared to daytime visits, which is highly recommended. This venue is not only used for hosting concerts and other events but is also a popular wedding location, where ceremonies can be held in the auditorium and wedding receptions in the dining hall.
