About Kaga Onsen-kyo (Kaga Hot Spring Village)
Famous hot springs, ancient baths, and beauty baths. A hot spring town rich in the delicate traditions of Kaga's one million stones.
Details
Kaga Onsen-kyo is composed of four hot spring areas: "Katayamazu Onsen," "Yamashiro Onsen," "Yamanaka Onsen," and "Awazu Onsen." It is approximately a 20-minute ride by Shinkansen from Kanazawa City, the capital of Ishikawa Prefecture. The entire region is imbued with the unique and delicate traditional culture of "Kaga Hyakumangoku" (the largest domain during the Edo period). In addition to the hot springs, visitors can experience Kutani ware painting and hand-formed pottery at local kilns, as well as enjoy energy spots, castle towns, and fishing ports.
"Katayamazu Onsen" is located by the lakeside with a view of "Hakusan," one of Japan's three sacred peaks. The public bathhouse, designed by architect Yoshio Taniguchi, features a striking glass curtain wall, allowing guests to enjoy a spacious and relaxing time amidst the natural beauty of the lake, sky, and forest.
Near the main bathhouse, there are numerous ryokan (traditional inns) and shops, which embody the rich traditional hot spring culture characteristic of "Yamashiro Onsen." The "Old Main Bath" recreates the atmosphere of the Meiji era's main bathhouse, allowing visitors to fully immerse themselves in nostalgic times.
"Yamanaka Onsen" is associated with many stories related to Matsuo Basho. Before or after soaking in the hot springs, visitors can relax at the riverside deck set up at the famous sightseeing spot "Kusasenkei," enjoying the elegant scenery of the flowing river.
Additionally, for those who wish to explore various hot spring areas and experience different therapeutic effects, it is recommended to purchase the sightseeing ticket "Kaga Onsen-kyo Sightseeing Passport." This passport allows access to three out of 22 selected attractions, including hot spring facilities, for just 800 yen, making it a great value. For ticket purchase locations, please check the official Kaga Onsen-kyo website.
