About Kakegawa Castle
After restoration work, it is known as the first authentic wooden castle tower in Japan, the Tokai famous castle.
Details
Kakegawa Castle was built in the late 15th century by the Imagawa clan, who were the lords of Suruga, to advance into Tōtōmi. In 1590, after Yamauchi Kazutoyo took residence in Kakegawa Castle, he carried out extensive renovations, including the construction of the tenshu (main keep) and the Ōtemon (main gate), as well as the development of the castle town. The palace within the Ninomaru (second bailey) is a structure from the late Edo period and is one of only four remaining palace buildings in Japan, designated as an Important Cultural Property. It offers a glimpse into the political landscape and the lifestyle of the daimyō during the Edo period. Surrounding Kakegawa Castle are approximately 300 early-blooming Kakegawa cherry trees, and when the cherry blossoms bloom, the scenery of the famous castle intertwined with the cherry blossoms is breathtaking.
