About Kakugyō Kinkai Kōmyō-ji (Kinkai Kōmyō Temple in the Black Valley)

The founder of the Jōdo sect, "Hōnen Shōnin," built a thatched hut as the first temple of the Jōdo sect.

Details

Kinkaku-ji, also known locally as "Kurotani-san," is the head temple of the Jodo sect. In 1175, the founder of the Jodo sect, Hōnen, descended from Mount Hiei's Kurotani and built a thatched hut here to establish the sect, making it the first temple of Jodo. During the late Edo period, Matsudaira Yoshiyasu, the lord of Aizu, who served as the protector of Kyoto, stationed his headquarters here. Figures such as Kondo Isami and Hijikata Toshizo were under his command, which is why the temple is said to be the origin of the Shinsengumi. The Sanmon gate features a plaque inscribed with the Emperor's calligraphy "Jodo Shinshu Saisho Mon," and there are many noteworthy buildings, including the Amida Hall rebuilt by Toyotomi Hideyori and the Hall of Portraits enshrining Hōnen's image. The "Gokō Shiwachi Amida Buddha," adorned with unique spiral hair, is also a must-see highlight. Every year, a special autumn viewing event is held, during which the normally closed shoin and the beautiful strolling garden "Shiun no Niwa," known for its stunning autumn leaves, are open to visitors. During this period, there is also nighttime illumination of the autumn leaves, creating a dreamlike atmosphere.

Highlights

During the special autumn opening, there will also be a nighttime illumination of the autumn leaves.
