About Kaminuma Shōtenzan Kanki-in Shōtendō
You can appreciate the pinnacle of modern decorative architectural art up close.
Details
The main hall "Shōtendō" of the Kumano Seitenzan Kankiin underwent reconstruction in the 8th year of the An'ei era (1779) and became a decorative building that could rival the Nikkō Tōshō-gū, earning the title "Nikkō of Saitama." Its exquisite carving art is renowned far and wide.
The most spectacular highlight is the vividly colored and ornate carvings that adorn the entire structure of Shōtendō. From 2003, it took seven years of meticulous repairs to restore the main hall, which is considered the pinnacle of decorative architecture from 250 years ago, to its former vitality. With its dazzling colors and intricate carving techniques, Shōtendō was designated a national treasure in 2012.
