About Karatsu Castle
Also known as "Mizuki Castle," its graceful form is a representative landmark of Karatsu.
Details
Karatsu Castle was built in 1602 (the 7th year of the Keichō era) by Terasawa Hirotaka, a retainer of Toyotomi Hideyoshi and the first lord of the Karatsu Domain. It took seven years to complete. It is said that with the support of various daimyōs from Kyushu, materials from the dismantled Nagoya Castle (in Karatsu City) were used for its construction. The pine forest extending east and west from the castle resembles a crane spreading its wings, which is why it is also known as "Matsukaze Castle."
Karatsu Castle is divided into the honmaru (main keep), ninomaru (second bailey), sannomaru (third bailey), and the outer ramparts. The current tenshu (main keep) was rebuilt in 1966 as a cultural tourism facility. The interior of the tenshu was renovated in 2017, with the first floor serving as a tourist information center and experience floor, the second floor introducing the history of Karatsu, the third floor showcasing Karatsu ware, the fourth floor as a交流 (exchange) and休憩 (rest) area, and the fifth floor as a viewing area.
The observation room is a well-known spot for viewing, offering a panoramic view of Nijinomatsubara, Karatsu Bay, and the streets of Karatsu. In April, cherry blossoms bloom, and from April to May, it becomes a famous spot for viewing wisteria flowers. Additionally, by scanning the scenery in the observation room with a smartphone or tablet, visitors can access AR panoramic information about tourist attractions (an app is available for free download on the official website).
