About Kawazu Cherry Blossom Avenue

Every year from early February to the end of February, the early cherry blossoms bloom in competition along the Kawazu River.

Details

The cherry blossoms that bloom along the banks of the Kawazu River in Shizuoka Prefecture from early February each year are famous for their early flowering period. This type of cherry blossom was discovered by chance in Kawazu Town in 1955 and was named "Kawazu Sakura." It is believed to be a hybrid variety resulting from the natural crossbreeding of Kanhi Sakura and Oshima Sakura. Kanhi Sakura primarily grows in warm regions and begins to bloom as early as January, while Oshima Sakura is a wild species native to Japan. Kawazu Sakura is characterized by its large, deep pink petals. Due to the warm climate of the Izu region and its early blooming characteristics, Kawazu Sakura can take about a month to go from budding to full bloom. When the flowering season arrives, about 850 cherry trees bloom along the riverside, while the entire Kawazu Town area boasts around 8,000 cherry trees in full bloom. In the Kawazu Sakura tree-lined area, the "Kawazu Cherry Blossom Festival" is held every year to coincide with the blooming season, attracting countless flower-viewing enthusiasts from both Japan and abroad to enjoy the blossoms and take photos. During the festival, many exciting and lively activities are organized, including nighttime illuminations and various food stalls. Among these, the romantic atmosphere of the "Cherry Blossom Night Illumination Show" is particularly popular.

Highlights

Kawazu Cherry Blossoms typically bloom from early February to the end of February each year. The best viewing period is about 7 to 10 days after the flowers bloom. It is recommended to check the official website for updates on the blooming status. Every year, the "Kawazu Cherry Blossom Festival" is held in conjunction with the blooming season.
