Details
Kimiidera Temple was built over 1,250 years ago by a high monk from the Tang Dynasty for the monk Kōjō, and it is the second temple in the Saikoku Thirty-three Kannon Pilgrimage. The temple houses the secret Buddha, the Eleven-faced Kannon, which is designated as an Important Cultural Property.
To reach the Buddha Hall located on the hillside of Mount Nagasa from the entrance gate at the foot of the mountain, one must climb 231 steps. The view from this spot is one of the top scenic spots in Wakayama. You can overlook Wakanoura, which is designated as a Japanese Heritage site, and the magnificent scenery touches everyone’s heart. In 2022, an accessible cable car was installed, allowing visitors to reach the temple easily without the need to climb the stairs.
In addition to the unbeatable ocean view that enhances the travel atmosphere, the charming scenery of seasonal flowers is also not to be missed. Especially in spring, when 400 cherry trees of the Somei Yoshino variety bloom, and during the vibrant autumn foliage season in late October each year, many worshippers come to visit. The sacred area, adorned with pagodas and bell towers, becomes even more splendid.
