⛩️ Kishui Shrine Academy

📝 Introduction

The oldest shoin-zukuri architecture in Japan, designated as a World Heritage Site, still carries the anecdotes of Yoshitsune to this day.

📖 Details

Yoshimizu Shrine, located in Yoshinoyama, was originally a monk's residence called Yoshimizu-in built over 1300 years ago by the monk En no Gyoja. This is the best spot to enjoy the breathtaking view of the cherry blossoms in Yoshinoyama, famously known as "Ichimoku Senbon." It is said that Toyotomi Hideyoshi set up his main camp here during the cherry blossom viewing festival in Yoshino. The study hall on the premises is the oldest study hall building in Japan and is a representative masterpiece of the "early study hall style" constructed in the early Kamakura period. Inside the building, the "Kengyo no Ma" served as a hiding place for Minamoto no Yoshitsune, Shizuka Gozen, and Benkei when they were fleeing from Minamoto no Yoritomo. There is also the "Gyokuzou no Ma," which was used by Emperor Go-Daigo as a base for the Southern Court during the Nanboku-chō period. Numerous exhibits related to Emperor Go-Daigo and Hideyoshi are displayed, allowing visitors to experience the historical layers that have formed over time. The Yoshimizu Shrine study hall is not only designated as an Important Cultural Property by the national government but is also part of the "Sacred Sites and Pilgrimage Routes in the Kii Mountain Range," which is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, making it one of the must-see important buildings in Yoshino.
