About Kitagawa Village "Mona Garden" Mamon Tan Art Museum

Immersed in the beautiful experience of the Impressionist world.

Details

The Monet Garden, located in Kitagawa Village, Aki District, Kochi Prefecture, is a garden designed based on the one in Giverny, France, which was beloved by Monet. Under the guidance of the Monet Foundation, it has been authentically recreated and is the only garden in the world officially certified with the name "Monet Garden." With colorful water lilies, shimmering water surfaces, a drum bridge, trellises, rose arches, intermingling light, and various flower colors, visitors can experience a stroll through a landscape reminiscent of Monet's paintings. The most spectacular must-see spot is the vibrant water lily "Water Garden." Surrounding the pond are trees such as wisteria, willows, and cherry blossoms, which embody traditional Japanese colors, complemented by brightly colored flowers in red, yellow, and blue. The garden design, which blends Japanese and Western European cultures, allows visitors to feel the unique sensibility influenced by ukiyo-e that Monet experienced. Another must-visit is the "Bordighera Garden," which reopened after renovations in 2020. This garden is modeled after the paintings Monet created during his travels in Bordighera, Mediterranean, and cleverly utilizes the undulating terrain of Kitagawa Village as part of its charm. It is an original garden that does not exist in its birthplace, France. Additionally, be sure to visit the "Flower Garden," which blooms with flowers throughout the seasons. In particular, May showcases beautiful roses and orange California poppies in full bloom.
