The Kuju Dream Great Suspension Bridge is located at the foot of the Kuju Mountain Range, on the border with Kumamoto Prefecture. It is a large tourist suspension bridge that spans the Kuju River at an elevation of 777 meters. Standing 173 meters high and 390 meters long, it is the highest walkable suspension bridge in Japan. From the bridge, visitors can enjoy breathtaking views of the surrounding valleys, making it a popular sightseeing spot filled with thrilling excitement. The construction of the bridge took two and a half years, and it was completed in 2006. The official name "Kuju 'Dream' Great Suspension Bridge" was chosen through a public selection process. The two main cables supporting the bridge are made up of seven strands of 53 millimeter diameter wire, capable of supporting 1,800 adults weighing 65 kilograms each. The total construction cost was approximately 2 billion yen, and it was built without any subsidies from the national or prefectural government, funded solely by Kuju Town. In 2017, the number of visitors surpassed 10 million. From the bridge, one can view the male and female waterfalls, known as the "Vibrating Waterfalls," which are selected as one of Japan's top 100 waterfalls. Additionally, at the "most thrilling spot" in the center of the bridge, there is a transparent small window that allows visitors to see the valley floor or take photos.
