⛩️ Kongōbū-ji (Kongōbu Temple)

Kongōbūji Temple was founded by Kōbō Daishi Kūkai and represents a sacred site of Japanese Buddhism. The temple grounds include the area of Mount Kōya, which is over 800 meters above sea level, centered around the main hall known as "Kondō," and features as many as 117 sub-temples. The architectural characteristic of Kongōbūji is its roof, which is covered with multiple layers of Japanese cypress bark, also known as "Hinoki-buki." A notable feature of the roof is the wooden bucket for firefighting, referred to as "Tensuibako." Entering the temple grounds from the worship entrance and walking into the hall called "Daiōkan," one can immediately see the folding screen paintings of cranes and pines, traditionally attributed to Saitō Toshimitsu. Further inside is the "Ume no Ma" (Plum Room), along with the folding screen paintings of willows, said to be created by Kanō Tansai, which are also breathtaking. After passing through the connecting corridor to the annex hall, one is greeted by the stone garden known as "Pandō-in," reputed to be one of the largest in the country. The stones arranged in the shape of a dragon are made from granite from Shikoku, believed to be the birthplace of Kōbō Daishi. Additionally, the main hall (Hombō), designated as an important cultural property, measures approximately 60 meters in length from east to west and 70 meters from north to south, showcasing its grand architecture that captivates visitors with its elegance. Visitors can also admire the "Waterfall Painting" and "Cliff Painting," contributed by the renowned Japanese artist Senju Hiroshi. While visiting, it is recommended to stop by the "Kōyasan Reihōkan" (Kōya Mountain Treasure Museum), which houses many Buddhist paintings and cultural heritage statues passed down from Kōyasan. Here, one can learn about the history and traditions of Kongōbūji through historical materials and view numerous national treasures and important cultural properties. Furthermore, the vast mountainous area is dotted with various historic sites such as "Danjō Garan" and "Okunoin." It is advisable to wear comfortable walking shoes and confirm the worship routes before heading to the area. Additionally, Kongōbūji offers participatory experiences such as sutra copying and precept ceremonies.
