About Koriyama Goldfish Museum
The museum located in the Goldfish Capital is famous for its "Moving Goldfish Illustrated Book."
Details
Nara Prefecture's Yamato-Koriyama City has a 300-year history of goldfish farming, with an annual shipment volume of 58 million fish. It is known as one of Japan's prominent goldfish production areas, alongside Yatomi City in Aichi Prefecture and Nagasu Town in Kumamoto Prefecture. One of the most special attractions in the goldfish capital is the Koriyama Goldfish Museum, operated by the Yamato Nishikigoi En fish farm.
The founder was the late Mr. Masaharu Shimada, the former owner of Yamato Nishikigoi En. Concerned that Koriyama City, known as the hometown of goldfish, lacked a related museum, he personally funded the conversion of part of the fish farm into a museum, which opened in 1982.
Inside the museum, goldfish are kept in tanks categorized by species. In addition to common varieties, there are also native species, high-grade varieties, and those that are endangered, totaling about 40 types of goldfish. Each tank is accompanied by detailed descriptions, making it feel like a moving goldfish encyclopedia. Furthermore, it displays a wealth of information related to goldfish, including historical documents that introduce the relationship between humans and goldfish. The fish farming area is also open for visitors to observe.
