About Kubota Itchiku Art Museum

A museum that fully presents the worldview of the dyer Kubota Itchiku through works, buildings, gardens, and more.

Details

An architectural structure with a stateless style, located just one street away from the "Kohoku VIEW LINE" along the shores of Lake Kawaguchi. This museum showcases the works of dyer Kubota Itchiku, who, using modern techniques, has brought back to life the "Tsujihana-zome," a dyeing technique that flourished from the late Muromachi period to the early Edo period, known as the "dreamlike dye." Inside the main building, supported by 16 cedar pillars over a thousand years old, the "Kōkyō" series of works by Kubota is displayed, along with numerous creations and representative works themed around Mount Fuji. The new building, constructed with Ryukyu limestone and Okinawan plaster, features a collection of agate beads gathered by Kubota. The striking appearance of the eight round columns, along with antique furniture and goods from Asia and Africa inside, creates a unique architectural style and atmosphere that is truly one of a kind. The main entrance of the museum is composed of various ancient Indian city gates, making a strong impression. The garden features artistic works such as waterfalls and caves that should not be missed. Visitors can enjoy a leisurely stroll along the paths, and also relax at the museum café with its spacious terrace or the tea house located in front of the waterfall, savoring the pleasure of the scenic views.
