About Kumano Kodo Iseji Umakozen Ridge
Walking along the ancient pilgrimage path of continuous stone slabs, I head towards the breathtaking Ma Yue Ridge.
Details
After the mid-Heian period, the faith surrounding the Kumano Sanzan (Kumano Hongu Taisha, Kumano Hayatama Taisha, and Kumano Nachi Taisha) in the southern part of the Kii Peninsula spread widely. The "Kumano Kodo" served as a pilgrimage route for many people at that time. In 2004, it was registered as a UNESCO World Heritage site, with several routes developed for easier walking.
Among the Kumano Kodo, the route from Ise to the Kumano Sanzan is known as Ise Road, which also appeared in the book "Tōkaidōchū Hizakurige." It is said that one must visit "Ise seven times and Kumano three times" — a pilgrimage route from Ise Jingu to Kumano during the Edo period.
On the Ise Road, there are several routes such as Matsumoto Ridge, which offers a view of Kumano-nada, and Tōrō, which overlooks Maruyama Senmaida, as well as the flat coastal road along Nanari no Ohama. Among these, the relatively easy trail for beginners is the Makochi Ridge. The beautiful stone path stretches through the majestic cypress trees of Owase, with attractions like "Yoru Naki Jizō" along the way, allowing one to experience the classic atmosphere of the Kumano Kodo. Starting from the Michi no Eki Umiyama, after enjoying the view of Owase City from the Makochi Ridge viewpoint, the slope suddenly becomes steep. Continuing towards Tengu Kurayama provides a panoramic 360-degree view. Additionally, Makochi Park, located on the way down from Takamine, is a famous cherry blossom viewing spot, attracting large numbers of visitors in spring.
Highlights
The uniquely charming stone-paved road protects the pilgrimage path from being washed away by the heavy rainfall in Owase. The hiking trail to Tengu Kurayama is relatively steep, and you must pass through ladders hanging on the rocks along the way. The walking time exceeds 2 hours, so please prepare appropriate hiking shoes and clothing for the trek.
