Details
Kumano Nachi Taisha is an ancient shrine with a long history, dating back to 662 BC. The origins of Kumano Nachi Shrine lie in the natural worship of the Nachi Falls. It is said that Emperor Jimmu was the first to worship the Nachi Falls as a deity. As one of the famous Kumano Sanzan, Kumano Nachi Shrine serves as the head shrine of the Kumano shrines distributed throughout Japan. Not only is it a sacred place filled with divine light, but it is also said to be quite effective for bringing good relationships, hence it is referred to as "Yui no Miya" (結宮). Throughout the year, many people visit to pay their respects via the Kumano Kodo pilgrimage routes.
After climbing the long stone steps, you will find the vermilion-colored worship hall, and further inside is the main hall composed of six sanctuaries dedicated to different deities. Besides the shrine buildings, there are many fascinating sights within the shrine grounds. For example, there is the statue of "Karasu" (烏石), the embodiment of the Yatagarasu, which is said to have transformed into a stone after guiding Emperor Jimmu to his destination. There is also the "Kusunoki no Kami" (楠靈社), a large camphor tree with a big hollow at its base, where it is believed that passing through the hollow can dispel misfortunes and grant wishes. Additionally, the sacred tree "Takeha no Oki" (竹柏大樹), which coexists with the natural environment of Kumano, is highly revered as a symbol of peace and disaster prevention.
General worship is free, but it is recommended to experience a formal worship ceremony (with a donation of 5,000 yen). The worship experience lasts about 30 minutes, during which participants can listen to the shrine staff explain the origins and historical legends of the shrine. After the worship, the shrine office provides amulets, such as the "Katsumori" (勝守), featuring the Yatagarasu, the messenger of the Kumano deity, to pray for divine protection. The shrine was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2004.
