About Kushiro City Marshland Observatory
A breathtaking spot where you can overlook Japan's largest wetland and enjoy a leisurely stroll in the surrounding area.
Details
Kushiro Wetland is the largest wetland in Japan. The Kushiro River winds like a snake through approximately 26,000 hectares of vast land, home to around 2,000 species of precious plants and animals, including the nationally designated special natural monument, the Red-crowned Crane (丹頂鶴). It is truly a treasure trove of nature.
The Kushiro Wetland Observatory, located on a high plateau on the west side of the wetland, is the first recommended stop when visiting the Kushiro Wetland. The three-story building has a paid exhibition area on the second floor and above. The observation room and rooftop on the third floor offer panoramic views of the wetland, the Akan mountain range, and the city of Kushiro. The second floor displays information related to the wetland, featuring a three-dimensional model of the wetland, models of plants and animals, and a video area. The first floor includes a shop and restaurant, which can be accessed without purchasing a ticket.
Surrounding the observatory is a walking trail approximately 2.5 kilometers long, where visitors can enjoy the untouched natural scenery. From the satellite observation point along the trail, one can gaze upon the endless expanse of the wetland. The breathtaking views make one forget they are in Japan. Wheelchair users can also reach the satellite observation point smoothly via the accessible clockwise route.
Highlights
You can overlook the Kushiro Wetlands from the high observation platform. The third-floor observation room and rooftop offer panoramic views of the wetlands and surrounding mountains.
