About Kushiro City Zoo
The largest zoo in Hokkaido! Encounter animals that inhabit the northern land.
Details
Kushiro City Zoo opened in 1975 and covers an area of 47.8 hectares, making it the largest zoo in Hokkaido. It houses nearly 50 species of animals, ranging from large animals like lions, tigers, giraffes, and polar bears to smaller ones like raccoons, otters, and rabbits. Additionally, the zoo features a Red-crowned Crane Conservation Breeding Center and Japan's only Ural Owl Conservation and Breeding Center, dedicated to research on breeding rare animals.
One of the most attractive areas in the zoo is the "Hokkaido Zone," which showcases the characteristics of the famous local attraction, the "Kushiro Wetlands." Here, visitors can observe common wildlife in the wetlands, including Red-crowned Cranes, Siberian Flying Squirrels, White-tailed Eagles, and Steller's Sea Eagles. The walking paths are equipped with wooden boardwalks that weave through the flowers, grasses, and trees growing in the wetlands, giving visitors a feeling of being in a pristine marshland.
The zoo also offers various activities that can create more enjoyable memories for families and friends. Additionally, there is an amusement park with a large Ferris wheel and sky bicycles, as well as a barbecue area (reservation required) for grilling.
Located in the Kushiro area, the zoo experiences summer temperatures around 20 degrees Celsius, providing a cool and pleasant environment to leisurely observe the lives of the animals.
