Kyoto Aquarium is a large inland aquarium that opened in March 2012 in Umekoji Park, near Kyoto Station. The aquarium consists of 10 areas and houses approximately 250 species and a total of 15,000 aquatic animals, including the national special natural monument, the Japanese giant salamander, which inhabits the Kamo River, as well as black-footed penguins, spotted seals, various fish, and jellyfish. The "Kyoto Penguin Relationship Map," which showcases the complex relationships among the penguins, has sparked interest by revealing that their social dynamics are similar to those of humans.
The most popular area is the "Sea of Kyoto." Watching the massive tanks gives visitors the feeling of being underwater, providing an immersive experience. There is also the "Jellyfish Paradise," which features around 30 species and 5,000 jellyfish, the largest collection in Western Japan. One of its highlights is the "GURURI" tank, where visitors can enjoy a 360-degree view of the jellyfish, making it feel as if they are floating in the ocean alongside them. The explanatory board "Jellyfish Paradise Illustrated Guide" clearly shows the caregivers' affection for the jellyfish, making it one of the must-see attractions in the aquarium.
Additionally, adhering to the concept of "the closer you get, the more you love," there are various enjoyable activities beyond just observing the animals. There are "feeding times" where visitors can listen to the caregivers' explanations, as well as workshop experiences suitable for children. These rich programs allow for a deeper understanding of the animals.
Moreover, most of the viewing areas are indoors, allowing for a comfortable visit regardless of the weather, which is another popular aspect. At night, there are limited-time events called "Night Aquarium," making it a must-visit attraction around Kyoto Station.
