About Kyoto Kanmi Bunno-suke Tea House Kyoto Main Store
A dessert shop founded by the second generation rakugo performer Katsura Bunnosuke, famous for its sweet sake and warabi mochi.
Details
The dessert shop "Kyoto Kanmi Bunnosuke Chaya" is located near the famous tourist attractions of Kiyomizu-dera and Yasaka Shrine, close to Yasaka Pagoda. The shop was established in 1909 (Meiji 42) by the second generation of Kamigata Rakugo, Katsura Bunnosuke, and originally served sweet sake.
Equally famous as the sweet sake is the "Warabimochi," made using traditional methods from the time of establishment. The homemade Warabimochi, lightly scented with Nikki (Japanese cinnamon) and generously dusted with soybean flour, is the shop's signature item. The "Hon-nama Warabimochi Mubi," made solely with hon warabi powder and wasanbon sugar, is also quite popular. Additionally, the red beans, agar, and shiratama are all made with carefully selected domestic ingredients. The elegant sweetness of the anmitsu and red bean soup can help relax tired bodies after walking. Seasonal limited menu items, such as summer shaved ice and winter grilled dumplings, are also worth trying.
The shop retains the refined atmosphere of a tea house that welcomed worshippers at its founding, allowing guests to enjoy desserts while seated on folding chairs in the garden. When visiting Kyoto's famous tourist spots, it's a great place to take a break.
