About Kyoto Karakami Experience Workshop - Tangmaru

Experience the traditional craft of Kyoto, "Kyotogami" (京唐紙).

Details

The so-called "Kyoto Karakami" refers to traditional Japanese paper made by applying a mixture of mica, white pigment, seaweed, and dyes onto wooden printing blocks engraved with ancient traditional patterns, and then pressing it with the palm of the hand. Initially used for writing poetry, it is now often used as door paper or wallpaper in residences, temples, and tea rooms. The company "Maruni," which carries on this craft, has opened an experiential workshop that conveys the charm of Kyoto's traditional crafts. A particularly recommended experience is the "Karakami Printing Experience + Workshop Tour," where participants can create their own Kyoto Karakami and also observe the skills of artisans. Under the guidance of artisans, participants will use authentic wooden blocks carved over 120 years ago to print Karakami in a publication size of (W47×H28cm) (three sheets in total). The patterns on the blocks change monthly, and after selecting a pattern, participants can freely combine it with over 20 colors of washi paper to create their own unique "Karakami." The completed Karakami can be taken home directly, or for an additional fee, can be made into a mini folding screen or decorative frame. There are also experiences for printing postcards using mini wooden blocks in postcard size, and for creating Karakami goshuincho (stamp books) and decorative frames. Additionally, in the attached gift shop, there are wooden stamps shaped like the printing blocks and various Karakami stationery products on display. It is recommended to choose a Karakami product that represents the beauty of Kyoto's traditions as a souvenir from your trip to Kyoto.
