About Kyu-Furukawa Garden

The garden perfectly blends Japanese and Western styles.

Details

The garden within the residence of the third-generation head of the Furukawa Foundation, Furukawa Toranosuke. It cleverly utilizes the terrain of the Musashino Plateau, with a Western-style mansion built on a small hill to the north, a Western garden on the slope, and a Japanese-style garden in the lowland, creating a harmonious blend of Japanese and Western designs. The Western mansion and garden were designed by Dr. Josiah Conder, who significantly influenced the Japanese architectural scene with works such as the "Kikyo Hall" and the "Tokyo Resurrection Cathedral." The Japanese garden was created by Ogawa Jihei VII, a Kyoto garden artist responsible for gardens like the "Heian Shrine Garden" and "Maruyama Park." The gardens, crafted by these two geniuses, perfectly integrate Japanese and Western styles and are a rare example of well-preserved modern gardens, designated as a national scenic spot. The Western garden features roses, and during the blooming seasons of May, June, and October, the garden presents a picturesque beauty. Additionally, the Japanese garden, centered around the "Shinji Pond," includes a "Karesansui" dry waterfall that expresses the landscape without using water, along with a large waterfall cascading from a height of 20 meters, creating a calm and serene atmosphere.

Highlights

A beautiful garden that blends the beauty of Western gardens and Japanese gardens. During the rose season in May and October, a rose festival is held. In November, you can enjoy the simultaneous display of autumn leaves and roses in the Japanese garden.
