About Lake Ashi
The caldera lake of the Hakone volcano. The scenery is beautiful, and the tourist facilities are well-developed.
Details
Lake Ashi was formed about three thousand years ago due to volcanic activity that caused a steam explosion, resulting in a significant collapse of mountains and forests that blocked rivers. In fact, the source of the river springs is almost entirely from rainwater, so Lake Ashi can also be described as a giant puddle.
The lakeside is equipped with numerous recreational facilities and souvenir shops, and boat tours on the lake are very popular. Additionally, historical sites around Lake Ashi, such as the Hakone Checkpoint, the cedar tree-lined old Tōkaidō road, and the Gora Park located at the former site of the imperial villa, are also quite popular. If you're lucky, you can see the stunning "Reverse Fuji," where Mount Fuji is reflected on the surface of the lake from the southern shore of Lake Ashi. The lake is also a famous fishing spot, where you can catch species like sweetfish, rainbow trout, and largemouth bass. Every year on October 1st, the sweetfish caught on the opening day of the fishing season are offered to the imperial family.
Lake Ashi also has a mysterious side. The lake originally belonged to the sacred domain of Hakone Gongen (now known as Hakone Shrine), where Yamabushi performed purification rituals. Additionally, there is a legend that in ancient times, the nine-headed dragon resided here and was subdued under the prayers of the monk Manjū, later being enshrined as the Kuzuō Myōjin.
