About Lake Notoro
The coral grass dyes the lakeside into a stunning fiery red landscape.
Details
Lake Notoro is located on the west side of Abashiri City in eastern Hokkaido. In autumn, it is covered with red coral grass, creating a unique landscape. There is a wooden walkway set up in the "largest coral grass habitat in Japan," allowing visitors to experience the view that resembles a stage covered in a carpet of coral grass.
Additionally, clam digging during low tide is also quite famous, with the season open from mid-April to mid-July, attracting many tourists to join in the clam collection, making it a lively event. The northern side of the lake is a saltwater lake connected to the Sea of Okhotsk, where visitors can enjoy drifting ice in winter and magnificent natural scenery in summer. The shellfish found here, in addition to clams, include scallops, surf clams, sea snails, oysters, and sea urchins, making it a well-known seafood harvesting area.
Around the lake, there are fishing ports in Futamioka and Ubaranai, and in the past, the National Railways' Yukuwa Line, famous for its moving window views, passed along the lakeside.
Highlights
The wetland features a wooden boardwalk, allowing for close-up views of coral grass. Lake Notoro is connected to the sea, and during high tide around late October, it may be difficult to see the coral grass, so please pay special attention. In early autumn mornings, when morning mist appears, you can witness a dreamy landscape. It is a renowned seafood harvesting area.
