About Lake Onuma (Gunma Prefecture)
A lake destination that can be fully enjoyed by both outdoor enthusiasts and those seeking relaxation.
Details
Akagi Mountain is a famous peak in Gunma, historically a site of local worship. At the summit, which stands at an elevation of 1,350 meters, lies Lake Onuma, a mysterious volcanic crater lake. Surrounded by primeval forests, its expansive surface area of approximately 800,000 square meters is crystal clear, allowing travelers to find peace for their souls.
There are many seasonal outdoor activities here; in summer, visitors can enjoy canoeing, boating, and camping, while in autumn, fishing for whitefish is popular. In winter, ice fishing for whitefish can be experienced. Another must-see sight is the "Ice Bubbles" that appear only in winter. Methane gas in the water freezes into transparent ice balls that float on the surface, creating a surreal landscape that seems like another world. This phenomenon can also be seen at Lake Akan and Lake Nukabira in Hokkaido, but Lake Onuma is a rare observation spot in the Kanto region.
There is a walking trail along the lakeside, which takes about 30 minutes to complete. Visitors can fully immerse themselves in the charm of nature amidst the beautiful scenery of spring greenery and autumn leaves throughout the seasons.
