About Maglev Railway Museum
Through the exhibition of vehicles such as the Shinkansen and superconducting magnetic levitation trains, one can understand Japan's railway technology and history.
Details
The Maglev Railway Museum located in Nagoya, Aichi Prefecture, showcases 39 actual vehicles, primarily featuring the Tōkaidō Shinkansen, along with other trains such as conventional lines and superconducting maglev trains. Upon entering the museum, visitors first encounter the "Symbolic Vehicle Display Area," where three trains that once set world speed records are exhibited: the C62 steam locomotive, the 955 Shinkansen test train (300X), and the superconducting maglev train MLX01-1.
In the main exhibition hall, both old and new trains come together, showcasing the essence of railways. Visitors can closely observe and touch the trains, as well as explore the interiors. One of the highlights is the display of Shinkansen vehicles from the 0 series to the N700 series, allowing visitors to learn about the development history of the Shinkansen while viewing the actual trains. Additionally, exploring the interiors of vintage vehicles like the Hoji6005 steam railcar is a major enjoyment at the Maglev Railway Museum.
A key attraction within the museum is the intricately crafted driving simulator. In the Shinkansen simulator "N700," visitors can operate the controls in a full-sized N700 series driver's cab, experiencing the operation between Tokyo and Nagoya. The simulator also features CG (computer-generated) recreations of scenic views along the route, including Mount Fuji, immersing users in the experience. Furthermore, the "driving" simulator for conventional lines is also quite popular (driving experiences require an additional fee and are available on a first-come, first-served basis).
Additionally, a massive three-dimensional railway model that recreates the scenery along the Tōkaidō Shinkansen route between Tokyo and Osaka is another major highlight. In about 20 minutes, the model perfectly replicates a 24-hour railway operation, showcasing many spectacular scenes. Besides that, the convenience store "Delica Station," which sells railway bento and other products available at Nagoya Station, is highly recommended. Visitors can enjoy their purchased bento inside the museum, and it also offers familiar ice cream sold on Shinkansen trains.
