Details
Famous tourist attractions and stunning scenic spots in Kunigami Village, located in the northern part of Okinawa's main island. At the end of the mountain road extending from the Yina Village, there is a cliff approximately 80 meters high that juts out toward the East China Sea. "Banta" (バンタ) is an Okinawan dialect term meaning "cliff." It is said that when people threw bundles of thatch used for roofing off the cliff, they were scattered by the strong winds, which led to the name.
The cliff has been set up as a viewing platform, offering a panoramic view of the azure sea of Yanbaru National Park, as well as the beautiful sunset over the horizon, with the islands of Ihiraki and Izena visible in the sea. The viewing platform features a pavilion for visitors to rest, allowing for comfortable viewing even during the intensely sunny seasons.
In the past, the area was known for its treacherous transportation, requiring wooden stakes driven into the rocks and tree roots extending from the rocks to cross the cliff. Due to the extremely poor road conditions, pedestrians could not pass each other, so when encountering someone coming from the opposite direction, one party had to retreat. Although the road has been repaired today, caution is still necessary when passing through.
