About Matsushima
One of Japan's three scenic views, the magnificent landscape of the islands is breathtaking.
Details
Matsushima, along with Amanohashidate in Kyoto and Miyajima in Hiroshima, is known as one of the "Three Views of Japan," renowned scenic spots across the nation. Since the Heian period, the unique and magnificent horizon of the Pacific Ocean, interwoven with over 260 lush green islands of various sizes, has deeply captivated people.
Matsushima has four main viewing areas: East, West, South, and North, collectively known as the "Four Great Views of Matsushima." Each viewing area offers a different perspective, and the views are represented by specific kanji characters based on their visual characteristics. They are: "Spectacular" from the viewpoint of Otakamori on the eastern side of Matsushima Bay; "Beautiful View" from the summit of Mount Fudasan; "Grand View" from Tamonzan at the northern end of Shichihama; and "Serene View" from the distant perspective of Ougandake.
Not only is the scenery stunning during the day, but the beauty of the sunrise and sunset is beyond description. The changing landscapes of cherry blossoms in spring, fresh greenery in summer, autumn leaves, and winter snow scenes are truly enchanting. Matsushima Bay is a calm, wave-free inner bay rich in seafood. The small yet flavorful oysters and eel are particularly famous, with many restaurants offering related dishes.
Highlights
You can enjoy the elegant and magnificent scenery that is ranked among Japan's three scenic views. Not only the daytime landscape, but the sunrise and sunset are also not to be missed.
