The estimated age of the tree exceeds a thousand years, and it is listed as one of the "Three Great Cherry Blossoms of Japan," the Benishidarezakura.
Details
The Shidarezakura (weeping cherry tree) is a symbol of Miharu Town in Fukushima Prefecture and is beloved by the local community. The branches extend outward, adorned with delicate flowers that resemble a cascading waterfall, earning it the name Takizakura (waterfall cherry). Estimated to be over a thousand years old, it stands 13.5 meters tall, with branches extending 25 meters east to west and 20 meters north to south. Its magnificent full bloom is ranked among the "Three Great Cherry Trees of Japan." It was the first cherry tree designated as a national natural monument, celebrating its centennial designation in 2022.
The best time to view the blossoms is from early to mid-April, when a large number of cherry blossom tourists flock to the area. A pathway has been created that encircles the cherry tree, allowing visitors to appreciate the blossoms from various angles, and lights are illuminated at night. The Takizakura appears even more striking in the darkness, showcasing a different kind of grandeur compared to the daytime.
Miharu Town is home to about 10,000 cherry trees, including 70 weeping cherry trees that are over a hundred years old. When visiting the Miharu Takizakura during the blooming season, it is also worthwhile to explore nearby cherry blossom spots.
