📖 Details
Miyanohara Onsen is one of the Beppu Hachiyu, located in a mountainous hot spring town that can be reached by bus in about 10 minutes from the Takaragawa Onsen. The atmosphere of this hot spring town, away from the hustle and bustle of the city, is leisurely and tranquil, filled with a strong scent of sulfur. The spring water is a white, cloudy sulfur spring, said to have certain therapeutic effects on skin diseases and neuralgia.
Since the Edo period, this area has been known for producing "alum" using hot spring steam. The Yubana Koya, a production workshop, has a unique design and is a representative landscape of Miyanohara Onsen. After the Meiji era, with the import of chemical products from overseas to Japan, alum production declined, while the bath additive Yubana, produced during the alum manufacturing process, became the main product.
Located in the Miyanohara Onsen area, "Miyanohara Yuzuri" is a tourist facility that combines hot springs and gourmet food. Inside, there is a workshop that still uses traditional techniques to produce Yubana. Visitors can observe the Yubana manufacturing process, designated as an Important Intangible Cultural Asset of Japan, purchase Yubana products suitable as souvenirs, and enjoy the beautiful scenery while soaking in the attached outdoor rock hot spring.
In addition to Yubana, Miyanohara Onsen's specialty that should not be missed is the "Onsen Pudding," a dessert steamed with hot spring steam. In front of "Okamotoya," located near the "Jizoyu" station, there is often a crowd of people buying Onsen Pudding.
