Daishoin Temple was established in the first year of Daidō (806) and is the oldest temple in Miyajima, Hiroshima Prefecture. It is said that the temple was founded by Kōbō Daishi during his ascetic practices on Mount Misen after returning from Tang China. There are traces of Kōbō Daishi throughout the sacred peak of Misen, and Daishoin serves as the head temple managing these historical sites. Within the temple grounds, the guardian deity of Misen, Sankitō Daikongen, is enshrined, along with Fudō Myōō, who was regarded as a protective Buddha by Toyotomi Hideyoshi, and the Eleven-faced Kannon, the local Buddha of Itsukushima Shrine. Among these, the blessings for warding off misfortune and bringing good luck are particularly effective, and Daishoin is listed as one of the "Three Great Masters of Japan for Warding Off Misfortune and Bringing Good Luck." The experiences offered at the temple are quite diverse, including zazen (seated meditation), sutra copying, writing Buddhist texts, and esoteric meditation. There is also a unique training experience course that accepts only one group per day. Additionally, there is a plan to perform goma (fire rituals) using the "Eternal Flame," which has been burning for over 1,200 years, lit by Kōbō Daishi during his time of practice in the area. The "Eternal Flame" is also known as one of the flames that ignited the "Flame of Peace" in the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park.
