About Moji Port Nostalgic District
Strolling through the retro architecture, experience the wonderful feeling of seemingly traveling back to the Meiji era.
Details
In the early Meiji period, Moji Port thrived as an international trading port and still retains many charming buildings constructed from the Meiji to early Showa periods. Strolling through this area and exploring these historical buildings is quite enjoyable.
First, visit the "JR Moji Port Station," which serves as the gateway. After undergoing renovations completed in 2019, it has restored the wooden two-story structure from the Taisho era, 105 years after its opening. Inside the station, the "Old First and Second Waiting Rooms" now serve as ticket counters and a tourist service center. You can also visit the "Old VIP Room," which was used during royal visits. Additionally, the Starbucks coffee shop and the restaurant led by chef Yoshihiro Naruse are very popular.
Moreover, there are many other fascinating sights, including the "Old Moji Mitsui Club," "Old Osaka Shosen," "Old Moji Customs," "New Shipping Building," and the "Kyushu Railway Memorial Museum." It is recommended to choose a restaurant or café along the way to savor the local specialty "Baked Curry" while enjoying this journey through time.
Additionally, you can admire the night view of Kitakyushu, which has been designated as one of Japan's "New Three Major Night Views," from the "Moji Port Nostalgic District Observation Deck." From late November to mid-March each year (varying by year), the "Moji Port Nostalgic Romantic Illumination" event is held, lighting up the entire town and creating a dreamy atmosphere around the winter harbor.
Highlights
Buildings from the Meiji era to the early Showa period line up in a row. Attractions are concentrated within walking distance. The night view and winter night lighting are very beautiful.
