About Morioka Kangen Onsen

With a history of over a thousand years of hot spring culture, it is a resort destination in Morioka.

Details

Morioka Kake Onsen is located next to Lake Goshō, formed by the interception of the Shizukuishi River. According to legend, during the late Heian period, when the Nine Years' War in Mutsu Province broke out, Minamoto no Yoshie discovered the hot spring while setting up camp here. He tied his beloved horse to a stone with a hole and bathed in the hot spring, thus naming it "Kake Onsen." The six springs gush out about 2,000 liters of hot spring water per minute, containing a mildly alkaline simple sulfur spring that promotes blood circulation. Additionally, it contains metasilicic acid, known as a "natural moisturizing ingredient," which makes the skin smooth and delicate after soaking. In the hot spring town, there are three free foot baths available, and if you want to enjoy a leisurely soak, it is recommended to stay overnight at a ryokan. The view of Mount Iwate, the highest peak in the prefecture, and the Ōu Mountains framed by the lakeside is stunning. In early summer, you can enjoy fresh greenery; in autumn, the colorful leaves; and in winter, the snowy scenery, along with sightings of swans. Nearby, there are Koiwai Farm, Morioka Handicraft Village, and the Shion Statue (シオンの像), which is known as one of the three great lake sculptures of Mutsu, making it a great choice as a tourist spot.
