Located in Fukushima Prefecture, Mount Bandai has an elevation of 1,816 meters and is a stratovolcano formed by three mountain bodies, ranking as one of Japan's "One Hundred Famous Mountains." Its beautiful and majestic appearance was once referred to as "Iwahashi-yama" (meaning "Sky Bridge Mountain") and has been regarded as an object of mountain worship since ancient times. The volcanic eruption of Mount Bandai in 1888 caused the collapse of volcanic debris, which formed Lake Hibara, Goshikinuma, and several other lakes and marshes.
Mount Bandai spans the towns of Inawashiro, Bandai, and Kitashiobara, with hiking trails featuring varied terrain. Nearby, there are scenic routes that offer expansive views of the natural landscape, as well as easy walking trails. From spring to autumn, visitors can hike or enjoy scenic drives, while winter offers opportunities for snowboarding and skiing, providing a diverse range of activities.
There are a total of six hiking trails, with the shortest route from Yahho-dai to the summit taking about 2 hours on a standard hiking path. All trails are classified as beginner to intermediate levels, so please ensure you are adequately equipped with necessary gear when hiking.
