Mount Ishizuchi is one of Japan's Seven Sacred Mountains, renowned for its mountain worship. The highest peak in western Japan, Tengu Peak, and the location of the Ishizuchi Shrine at the summit, known as Mi-yama, along with the southern peaks collectively referred to as Mount Ishizuchi. There are routes suitable for experienced climbers and hikers, as well as trails for beginners, with multiple different climbing paths available.
If you choose to start your climbing route from Saijo City in Ehime Prefecture, it is recommended to take the Ishizuchi Mountain Cable Car. The base station at the foot of the mountain, located at an elevation of 445 meters, serves as the starting point, allowing you to enjoy an approximately 8-minute aerial walk. As you gradually ascend along the steep mountain terrain, the breathtaking natural beauty that comes closer with each step is truly awe-inspiring. After getting off at the summit station at an elevation of 1300 meters, the temperature difference from the base is sure to surprise you. This area is equipped with walking paths and viewing spots, and just arriving here is enough to feel the charm of mountain climbing. If your goal is to challenge the summit, there is also the main climbing path that has historically served as a pilgrimage route, so you need not worry about getting lost.
In spring, you can see Ishizuchi cherry blossoms and azaleas; in summer, there are events like the "Summer Mountain Festival"; and from autumn to winter, you can enjoy the changing leaves and the opening of ski resorts, showcasing different aspects throughout the four seasons.
Highlights
The elevation difference of the Ishizuchi Mountain Cable Car is 839 meters, making it the third highest in Japan. At the summit station, there is an observation area and picnic grounds where you can enjoy a 360-degree panoramic view. You can also transfer to the chairlift cable car (round trip 600 yen additional). The operation period is from late April to late November. The "Ishizuchi Mountain Starry Sky Tour," which allows you to enjoy night views and starry skies, has also become quite popular.
