Details

Mount Yufu has an elevation of 1,583 meters and is located in the northeastern part of Yufuin Onsen, one of Japan's renowned hot spring resorts, symbolizing the city of Yufu. This active volcano features two peaks and is often referred to as "Bungo Fuji" due to its beautiful and majestic appearance. It has been revered as a sacred mountain since ancient times and is mentioned in historical texts such as the "Bungo Fudoki," written in the early Nara period, and the oldest Japanese anthology of poems, the "Manyoshu." The area showcases stunning scenery that varies with the seasons, with the fresh green of spring and summer contrasting beautifully against the blue skies being particularly recommended. In early summer, the azaleas bloom, while autumn brings fields of silver grass and vibrant foliage. In winter, one can sometimes see frost and rime ice. Every March, a wild burning event is held, creating a unique landscape of darkness in the surrounding area. From the summit, one can overlook the Kuju mountain range, the streets of Yufuin, and Beppu Bay. There are several hiking trails available, with round-trip times ranging from 2 hours to 6.5 hours, allowing visitors to enjoy the hiking experience according to their time and physical condition.
