Renowned for ruling the local regions of China during the Warring States period, the former lord of Chōshū (now Yamaguchi Prefecture), the Mōri clan's old residence became a duke's estate after the Meiji Restoration. The magnificent architecture built in the shoin-zukuri style and the strolling garden showcase the exquisite landscaping techniques of the Meiji and Taisho eras, and it has been designated as a national scenic spot. The garden features rare facilities for its time, including a power generation system, water supply system, flush toilets, and a refrigerator using well water, equipped with the most advanced technology of that era.
Today, part of the residence has been converted into the Mōri Museum, which houses ancient documents, armor, swords, tea utensils, lacquerware, and other fine arts and crafts, including paintings. Among these are Sesshū Tōyō's "Four Seasons Landscape" and "Collection of Japanese Poems Ancient and Modern, Volume 8," as well as national treasures, important cultural properties, and cultural properties designated by Yamaguchi Prefecture.
The Mōri garden is also a popular spot for viewing autumn leaves. The best time for viewing is around mid to late November, during which the Mōri Museum holds a special exhibition titled "National Treasures."
