About Mugen Gorge Ferry

Explore the beauty of the dreamlike valley shrouded in river mist.

Details

Taking the Mugen Gorge ferry through the "Zaimagawa Gorge" in the Aizu region of Fukushima Prefecture, the journey lasts about 45 minutes. The ferry, originally used to transport people from the abandoned village of Kaneyama Town's Mikage Village to the opposite shore, has now been refurbished for tourism. The name Mugen Gorge is said to come from the valley being shrouded in river mist during the early mornings and evenings of summer, creating a dreamlike beauty. The sight of the ferry gliding slowly through the mist is truly captivating. It is said that river mist is most likely to form in the mornings and evenings from June to August, so it is recommended to visit during these times. In such lush nature, simply leisurely exploring brings immense joy, and there are walking plans that also allow visitors to see the heritage sites of the abandoned village. Guided tours at the bow of the ferry include visits to the Mugen Jizo, built in Showa 19, and the Kannon Hall, constructed around the same time as Mikage Village. This place, which has survived multiple disasters, has recently become a popular energy spot attracting attention.
