About Nagi Town Contemporary Art Museum
Pioneer of experiential art museums in Japan.
Details
In 1994, a museum opened in Nagi Town, Katsuta District, Okayama Prefecture, where nature and art coexist. This museum, also known as "NagiMOCA," features a semi-permanent integrated structure of artworks and buildings, and is regarded as a pioneer of experiential art museums in Japan.
Inside the museum, there are three exhibition areas: "Sun," "Moon," and "Earth," each aligned according to the local natural conditions. The axis of the "Sun" is oriented north-south, while the flat wall of the "Moon" points to the direction of 10 o'clock on the night of the Mid-Autumn Festival. The central axis of "Earth" points to the summit of Mount Nagi, which spans Tottori Prefecture's Chizu Town and Okayama Prefecture's Nagi Town, allowing visitors to experience the changes of each day and season, which is its exquisite feature. Each exhibition area is meticulously designed to enable visitors to engage their entire sensory experience.
The museum also has a café that overlooks a pond, where visitors can view Ai Miyawaki's work "Utsurohi (うつろひ)" through glass. In addition to the exhibition areas, there are also the South Wing (Community) Gallery and the North Wing Gallery, which frequently host contemporary art exhibitions, as well as various exhibitions of drawings, models, sketches, and more.
