📝 Introduction
A hidden sightseeing spot that resembles ancient ruins.
📖 Details
Not only does the Nago City Hall serve administrative functions, but it is also famous for its distinctive architecture, making it a hidden tourist attraction. With an appearance reminiscent of ancient ruins, it may be hard to recognize at first glance that it is a city hall. The design takes advantage of Okinawa's climatic conditions, allowing sea breezes to flow into the building for cooling effects, and it is known as a "green building." The terraces on each floor are adorned with lush plants such as Ficus macrophylla and Bougainvillea, making it a building rich in elements that symbolize Okinawa.
Completed in 1981 under the design of the Tokyo-based architectural group, the unique fortress-like structure has garnered attention from various sectors. After Okinawa returned to Japan, Nago City launched a construction plan for a new city hall, created through an open call for design proposals to build a new facility for its citizens.
Highly praised for its architectural style and structure, which are rarely seen in typical city halls, it also received the Architectural Institute of Japan Award for its work. Notably, terraces have been set up on each floor, designed as leisure spaces for citizens to use at any time.
