📝 Introduction
Stroll casually through the old streets lined with nostalgic buildings!
📖 Details
Nanaichimachi Avenue and Noguchi Hideyo Seishun Avenue are nostalgic old streets located in the center of Aizuwakamatsu City. The buildings from the Meiji, Taisho, and early Showa periods line the street, and walking along the avenue feels like stepping back into a beautiful past. The two streets intersect at a right angle, and it takes about 20 minutes (approximately 1.2 kilometers) to walk the entire route.
Nanaichimachi Avenue is a bustling street in Aizu and serves as the entrance on the west side of the castle. It is named because the market opens on the 7th of each month. The 800-meter street from JR Nanaichimachi Station to Noguchi Hideyo Seishun Avenue features old warehouses and Western-style buildings that evoke the romantic Taisho era, as well as wooden structures housing various shops. Many of these buildings have now been transformed into stylish cafes and souvenir shops, showcasing exquisite and dazzling traditional crafts such as painted candles, Aizu cotton, and Aizu lacquerware.
Walking from Nanaichimachi Avenue and turning right at the Oomachi intersection will lead you to Noguchi Hideyo Seishun Avenue. On the south side of the street, there is the "Old Kaiyo Hospital," where a young Noguchi Hideyo underwent surgery for hand burns. It is now the Noguchi Hideyo Seishun Museum. Noguchi Hideyo later became a great physician, and this place can be considered his birthplace of inspiration.
