An ancient temple that ranks among the most visited in Japan for New Year's prayers every year.

📜 Content

Naritasan Shinshoji Temple was founded in the year 940 to pray for the pacification of the "Taira no Masakado Rebellion" by the "Kanchō Daissen" (Great Priest Kanchō). This historic temple enshrines "Fudō Myōō" (the Immovable Wisdom King). The statue of Fudō Myōō was personally carved and consecrated by "Kōbō Daishi Kūkai," the founder of the Shingon school of Buddhism. During worship, visitors can enter the main hall and pray before the statue of Fudō Myōō. With the Kabuki family "Ichikawa" performing the first Kabuki play themed around Fudō Myōō, the deity became even more ingrained in the hearts of the Japanese people and is deeply revered. Notably, Naritasan Shinshoji Temple serves as an important site for New Year visits, attracting over 3 million visitors from January 1 to 3 each year, making it one of the most popular Hatsumode (the first shrine visit of the new year) spots in the Kanto region.
