About National Astronomical Observatory

Exploring the history of astronomy and space on the vast campus.

Details

The National Astronomical Observatory of Japan is the core research institution for astronomy in Japan, engaged in astronomical research and the development of astronomical observation instruments. Some areas of the campus are open for public tours, and there are also regular events aimed at the general public. Historical buildings constructed from the Taisho to early Showa periods are partially open to the public for free visits. On Saturdays and Sundays, a "Solar Observation Meeting" is held in the First Equatorial Room. Staff operate a 20 cm telescope inside the dome, and on clear days, visitors can see sunspots on the surface of the sun. Please check the official website for the dates of the observation meetings (no reservation required, free participation). Additionally, the 4D2U Dome Theater holds three regular events each month (limited to elementary school students and above, with a participant limit, reservation required). Attendees can see 3D images created using the astronomical simulation software "Mitaka," developed by the National Astronomical Observatory, and produced by a supercomputer. There are also two "Regular Observation Meetings" each month, where participants can observe various astronomical phenomena of the seasons using telescopes. Through a 50 cm public telescope, visitors can see lunar craters, Jupiter's bands, the Galilean moons, Saturn's rings, and more (with a participant limit, reservation required).

Highlights

Historical observation devices and buildings are open for public visits in certain areas. You can see the largest domestic 65 cm reflecting telescope. In addition to the tour, there are activities such as solar observation sessions and regular observation meetings.
